Unmarried pubescent Himba girl
Young girls usually have 2 or 4 plaits. Once they hit puberty, the plaits are brought forward over their eyes. After engagement is arranged for a girl, their faces are mostly hidden by even more dreads until the wedding. When a girl is married, she adopts the traditional Himba hairstyle that the outside world associates with the tribe. If she is married to a chief or high-ranking man in the tribe, elaborate headdresses (erembe) are adopted after marriage.
